National Disability Insurance Scheme or NDIS is a new way to provide individualized support for Australians with significant and permanent disability. It is designed to give participants more choice and control over the support they receive. It increase opportunities for skill development, community involvement and employment. The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a significant and permanent disability with funding for supports and services
What STA providers do?
Short term accommodation providers offer safe and supported living arrangements on a short-term basis for people with disabilities who cannot live at home because of risks to themselves or others, or whose family or carer needs respite from their caring responsibilities. These types of accommodation are also known as crisis accommodation , emergency accommodation or transitional accommodation.
There are different types of short term accommodation that can be provided depending on the individual’s needs, which may include
• Residential facilities
• Group homes
• Boarding houses
• Crisis houses/refuges
• Homeless shelters
• Hostels
What are the benefits of using Short Term Accommodation?
Benefits of using short term accommodation can include

How can I access Short Term Accommodation?
You can access Short Term Accommodation through a referral from an NDIS planner or provider. If you are already receiving supports through NDIS, you can discuss your needs with your service provider. If you have not yet been assessed as eligible for NDIS , you can contact NDIS to arrange an assessment. You can also contact your state or territory government disability services department.
